Four apps that I recommend for improving your mental well-being.
A simple and easy way to take care of your mental wellbeing is simply by keeping track of your emotions and meditating for even a small amount of time every single day. Although it can be difficult to stick to these habits, apps for your phone make it a lot easier to do so. Today I am going to discuss 4 of the best free apps you can get on your phone that are great for your mental health, all of them being ones that I have tested and used before.
Cove
Cove is one of the most innovative and intriguing apps that I have ever experienced. Designed by designers, academics and health services, it is also currently being tested by the National Health Service in the UK. This app was developed to help people express complex emotions through music. By tapping on the screen and creating a pattern, you create different and varying melodies that coexist with your current emotional state. By encouraging self-expression, Cove is developed to help improve emotional and mental health. This app would be extremely helpful to anyone experiencing stress or anxiety, or anyone in general as it is very fun and easy to use. As it is sometimes hard to express certain emotions through words, this app helps create ease and the feeling of being able to express yourself, as you create compelling songs that mirror the emotions you are experiencing in that moment. Highly recommended to anyone!
Youper
Youper is an incredible app for anyone wanting to journal and catalogue their emotions, as well as express themselves through a form of therapeutic journaling. Using AI technology to monitor and take control of your mental health, this app helps to reformulate thought patterns, notice thinking traps and track emotions. The AI technology takes you through a series of steps, from choosing words to describe your emotions, discussing a stressful event, or using guided meditation to calm you down. It also helps you identify thinking traps that you may not realize you use. All these quick conversations can have an instant impact on your day. One of my favourite parts of this app is the emotional and behavioral insights page. After using the app for a while, it begins to catalogue factors that may have a part to play in your emotional states. For example, factors that make me calm include being by myself, music, friends, and family, while factors that make me tired include socializing and school. This app is extremely helpful and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to feel more confident, optimistic, balanced, and happy.
Oak
Oak is an amazing app for anyone who wants to try out meditating but doesn't know whether they are willing to commit for a long period of time. Many other meditation apps offer great programs, but at less affordable subscription price. This app is free and has a very simple interface. Although there are less different types of guided mediations than other apps, I like this because it isn't overwhelming especially for people who are new to meditating. Oak also offers a great 10 day mantra meditation course that allows you to go deeper and really reap the benefits of meditation. I also love the badge system which ability to see how many minutes you've meditated, which is great motivation.
Insight Timer
Insight Timer is another excellent meditation app, and offers an even greater selection of meditation and music tracks that promote mindfulness-- in fact, the app has 45,000 free meditation and music tracks. There is a great selection of different guided meditations, and although it can often be a hit and miss (and it's hard to choose just ONE and stick to it, but that may just be a personal problem), it's another great, completely free app that's perfect for meditating. Plus it's easy to find guided meditations specific to something you want guidance on or are experiencing stress towards.
