5 Mysterious Hacks to Discover New Music

Because sometimes Spotify's recommendations are just not hitting right.

Ask ChatGBT for recommendations.

The nice thing about ChatGBT is you can get crazy specific. For instance, this is what I asked my ChatGBT:

ChatGBT was able to do this quite well and generated a list of artist and song recommendations.

You can play with this prompt quite a bit.

To try it out, copy and paste the prompt below and fill it out depending on what you would like to specify:

Give me (insert # of songs/artists to generate) (lesser-known, popular, niche, etc.) (artists/albums/songs) that sound like (insert artists/songs/albums here).

If you're asking specifically for artists, you can add:

For each artist, give me (# of song recommendations per artist) to listen to that best represents my music taste.

Try using apps like "Swipefy" or "Discz".

Swipefy is like Tinder, except you swipe left or right depending on whether you like the song. It's a great way to go through many different songs quickly and try to find some you'll like. It uses an algorithm to recommend songs to you, but you can also swipe through artists, playlists, albums, and more.

Discz is similar, except all of the recommendations are from users' created playlists (of about 5 songs each). You can follow people who have similar music tastes and quickly swipe through their playlists.

For both apps, any songs you swiped on are automatically added to a playlist of liked songs.

Find user-created playlists.

Using Spotify or Apple Music to generate song reccomendations can sometimes get tiring. I find that they often recommend the same songs or artists again and again, and I can never find anything "new." Finding user-created playlists by other people can sometimes be much more rewarding because they'll have deeper cuts and a more diverse selection of music.

Seek out creators that have a similar music taste to you - go on Tiktok or Youtube and search up "song recommendations". From here, you can feel out different people's music tastes and see if you have any of the same tastes in common. If you like their music taste, try following them on Spotify and listening to some of their playlists.

Add friends to your music streaming platforms!

Spotify's playlist collaboration feature is my favourite thing ever. I love getting songs recommended to me by my friends and seeing what they're listening to. I find a lot of good music from the people around me.

IMPORTANT TIP: Create a giant playlist of "songs to listen to".

This should be a giant ongoing playlist where you copy and paste every song you want to listen to but haven't yet. This way, you don't lose track of which songs you want to listen to, and you can access it whenever you feel like finding a new song.

This playlist should include the following:

  • Albums you want to listen to

  • "Best of" artist playlists for artists you already enjoy

  • Recommendations from friends

  • Song recommendations generated through different apps (copy and paste them in here)

You should shuffle this playlist and listen to the music whenever you're craving new music. Delete songs as you listen to them, and make sure you continuously add to this playlist.
