Five Books You Will Not Be Able to Put Down

Some of my favourite guaranteed page-turners.

In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead

Six friends are invited to a college reunion and must face the cold truth of a murder that happened a decade ago. As secrets unravel and fingers are pointed, the characters become connected to one another in shocking and revealing ways.

I could not stop reading this dark story that takes place behind the backdrop of frat parties and college classes.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Combining romance with an unstoppable thriller plot, this book wrapped itself around me and would not let me go.

A struggling writer, Lowen Ashleigh, is given the opportunity of a lifetime: to ghostwrite the remainder of famous writer Verity Crawford's series after Verity was injured and entered a coma. Verity's husband invites Ashleigh to the Crawford home, and in Verity's office, Lowen discovers a mysterious manuscript that she was not supposed to find. In it, Verity writes a series of confessions, including what actually happened the day her daughter died.

As Verity begins to develop feelings for Verity's husband, she realizes the situation might benefit from her showing him the manuscript.

A propulsive read that I could not recommend enough.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The story of a fictional Hollywood movie icon that felt so real it hurt me to put the book down and realize it was, in fact, only a story.

Unknown journalist Monique Grant is hired by movie star Evelyn Hugo to finally write her memoir after years of not telling the truth about her life, including the story of her seven husbands. Full of scandal, ambition, and love, this book is a hypnotic read and full of surprises.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Ten strangers are invited to a private island by an anonymous eccentric millionaire. Each one is marked for murder.

And each one begins to die, one by one...

Who is behind it? Who will be left to tell the tale? And why is this happening?

I remember reading the plot-twist for this book in Grade 7 and being utterly shocked. The suspense was almost unbearable - there is a reason why Agatha Christie is known as the Queen of Mystery.

One of the best mysteries of all time. Definitely worth reading.

The Night Swim by Megan Goldin

The tale of true crime podcast host Rachel Krall, who goes to a small town to uncover the mystery behind Jenny Stills, who was believed to be drowned - but who many thought had been murdered.

Past and present begin to collide as Rachel Krall begins to investigate the rape trial taking place within the town.

The book is a dark and emotional read that keeps you reading, jaw clenched, praying for justice to be served. I finished this book all in one night. I appreciated that the chapters alternated different POVs, and also included transcripts of episodes of Rachel's crime podcast, making this book extra engaging and readable.
